WHITBY, Ont. -- Orangeville Northmen coach Matt Sawyer said his team came to the Minto Cup with a chip on its shoulder. No one managed to dislodge it. The Northmen beat the Coquitlam Adanacs 9-4 Saturday to secure a two-game sweep and clinch their sixth national title in franchise history and their first since 2009. "The newest, or the freshest, is always the sweetest," Sawyer said. "This is really, really satisfying. "Going into this season we werent picked to win this ... we thought maybe we were being overlooked and we wanted to make a point." The Ontario side was barely challenged throughout the tournament, winning five straight games by a combined score of 60-24. They crushed the Adanacs 19-7 in Fridays series opener and also beat Coquitlam, the Whitby Warriors and the Calgary Mountaineers in the group stage. On Saturday, Orangevilles Brandon Benn and Rob Hellyer led the charge with a pair of goals each, while Mitchell Jones, Jeremy Noble, Jordan Critch, Cody McMahon, Bill Hostrawser added singles. The Northmen had an outstanding period for the second straight night. Down 3-1 early in the period, the Northmen scored five times in just under 10 minutes to turn the tables. Orangeville goaltender Dillon Ward got the ball rolling with a huge save, allowing his team to push the ball the other way and start their scoring run. Ward was named the tournaments most vaulable player. Up 6-3 going into the third, Orangeville effectively ended any hopes the Adanacs had of a comeback by scoring a pair in the first three minutes of the period. Noble, team captain, said the balanced offensive effort was a hallmark of the Northmen attack this season "Thats been our team all year, picking each other up and going to battle every night," he said. Wesley Berg scored two goals while Reid Reinholdt and Ben McIntosh also scored for the losing side from B.C. Bergs two goals and three points pushed him to the top of the tournament scoring chart with 21 points in six games. After struggling in the opening game of the final, David Diruscio was solid in the Coquitlam goal. The final shot count favoured Orangeville 66-34. "Its pretty emotional right now," Adanacs coach Neil Dinsdale said. "Ive spent a lot of years with these guys. They played as hard as they could tonight. We just didnt get the bounces and Orangeville is a very good team."
